Introduction |

Employee's State Insurance Scheme is an integrated multidimensional social
security scheme tailored to provide social protection to workers in the
organised sector and their dependants in times of sickness, maternity, death or
disablement
due to an employment injury or occupational disease. The scheme
tailored to suit health insurance requirements of workers provides full medical
facilities to insured persons and their family members, as well as, cash
benefits to compensate for losss of wages or earning capacity in different
contingencies.
E.S.I. Act was implemented in our country for the first time in Delhi & Kanpur on
24th Feb. 1952. Progressively it was extended to other
39 centres of U.P. Region. The Act applies in the first instance to non seasonal factories employing 10
persons in manufacturing process . The ESI Act contains an enabling provision under which
appropriate Govt. may extend the scheme to other classes of establishment, industrial, commercial, agricultural or otherwise. Under these provisions Govt. of U.P has extended the provisions of Act to new classes of establishment viz. hotel and restaurant, cinema including preview theaters, road motors transport undertakings, newspaper establishment,educational/medical,institions and shops employing 20 or more employees. In Uttar Pradesh, a total number of
11755 factories /establishments employing 2,83,450 employees were covered under the ESI Scheme as on 31.03.2010. At present, the employees of covered factories and establishments drawing wages up to Rs. 15,000/-
( excluding remuneration for over time work) per month come under the purview of the ESI Act, 1948.)
